The Man in the Iron Mask

I found this picture in volume 7 (of 20) of The International Library of Famous Literature edited by Richard Garnett, C.B., LL. D., published by Edward Lloyd Limited, London. The volume is undated but I would guess it dates from about 1900. The picture accompanies an excerpt from the Dumas novel.

The only musical connection with the Man in the Mask I've discovered is that, according to Voltaire, he was young (in 1661), tall and very handsome, he dressed in the finest lace and linen and enjoyed playing the guitar. Clearly the instrument in this picture is not a guitar, but is it a viol or an early cello?
